Abstract:
The Spanish version of the Bracken Basic Concept Scale (BBCS), like the English version, was designed to assess the following basic concepts in young children ages 2.5 - 8 years: Colors, Letters, Numbers, Comparisons, Shapes, Direction/Position, Social/Emotional, Size, Texture/Material, Quantity, and Time/Sequence. The test is administered individually using a series of drawings about which the examiner asks questions and invites the child to point out the correct response. Recorded answers are tallied to make a raw score which is converted to a standard score and a percentile rank. An age equivalent is also assigned for each concept. Coefficient Alpha was used to assess internal consistency with r ranging from .93 to .99. Validity was demonstrated by a strong increase in scores with age. Norms were established on a Latino sample of 293 children. Separate norms and estimates of reliability and validity are available for the English version of the BBCS.
